DESIRE MARKET
DATE
Spring 2021
LOCATION
Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA
PROJECT TYPE
Conceptual
GOAL
This project uses the daily architecture of super markets in an exaggerated form in order to analyze the negative effects of consumption and its relationship to the built environment.
Assigned to create a market based on concepts derived from the institution of grocery stores and monolithic models created from these concepts, Desire Market is a market that represents the contemporary state of depressive hedonia, or a cycle of purchase, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and then purchase again. The final section of Desire Market creates a fictional market in which occupants must traverse through different spaces that are selling the ‘products’ that humans desire. These products are representative of the manipulative nature of marketing and the relationship between the built environment, marketing, and identity validation. This market and the way in which an occupant must exit it represent the cycle of consumption and the struggle to escape it.
